Conventional coke production is largely driven by high temperature retorting, with the advanced large-scale coke oven technology being well-established. The carbonization chamber of top coke ovens exceeds 6.0m in height, with volumes surpassing 38.5m3. Predominantly, coke products find their crucial applications in metallurgical sectors, especially in blast furnace ironmaking and casting.

The main purpose of coke:

1. As the primary outcome of coking processes, over 90% of coke globally is allocated for blast furnace ironmaking. It has replaced charcoal in iron smelting, laying a pivotal foundation in the modernization of large blast furnaces-a significant milestone in the annals of metallurgical history.

2. It is essential in casting and smelting processes for non-ferrous metals like copper, lead, zinc, titanium, and antimony. Coke serves as a reducing agent, heat provider, and structural support column in these operations.

3. In the smelting industry, coke is used sparingly for making calcium carbide, carbon disulfide, phosphorus, and other elements. Within steel joint ventures, coke powder acts as a sintering fuel. Additionally, coke is a raw material in water gas production, which is crucial for synthesizing essential raw materials.

4. To secure superior technical and economic metrics in blast furnace operations, smelting coke (metallurgical coke) must possess optimal chemical and physical properties, including essential thermal characteristics for the smelting process.

5. Beyond its extensive use in iron and non-ferrous metal smelting (metallurgical coke), coke is also integral to casting, chemical industries, calcium carbide, and ferroalloy production.


Coke can largely replace refinery coke or stone grinds due to its cost-effectiveness, being significantly cheaper. As a carbon additive, coke's calorific value can reach over 9386K/KG, making it a viable alternative to burnt carbon. Notably, exporting burnt carbon requires quotas, highlighting coke's distinct price advantage as a carburizing agent.
