The production of coke necessitates the blending of various types of coal, such as coking coal and fertilizer coal. Typically, coke production is achieved through high-temperature retorting, utilizing advanced large-sized coke oven technology. These state-of-the-art ovens boast carbonization chambers exceeding 6.0 meters in height and volumes surpassing 38.5 cubic meters. Predominantly, coke is utilized in the metallurgical industry, serving crucial roles in both blast furnace ironmaking and casting.
The main purpose of coke:
1. As the quintessential product of coking, over 90% of coke in most countries is dedicated to blast furnace ironmaking. Replacing charcoal with coke in iron smelting has laid a transformative foundation for modernizing large blast furnaces, marking a monumental milestone in metallurgy history.
2. Coke is indispensable in the smelting of non-ferrous metals such as copper, lead, zinc, titanium, and antimony. It acts as a reducing agent, heat provider, and forms the structural skeleton in blast furnaces.
3. Within the smelting industry, coke is sparingly used for producing calcium carbide, carbon disulfide, phosphorus, and other elements. In steel joint ventures, coke powder serves as a sintering fuel, and it is also a crucial raw material for synthesizing water gas.
4. For optimal technical and economic performance in blast furnace operations, smelting coke (also known as metallurgical coke) needs to demonstrate specific chemical and physical properties, particularly its thermal characteristics throughout the smelting process.
5. Beyond its extensive use in iron and non-ferrous metal smelting, coke (metallurgical coke) is also vital in casting, chemical production, calcium carbide manufacturing, and ferroalloy processing.
